A day I will never forget…

This morning I went to the hospital with a woman and her baby, because the baby was really ill. When Elie and I walked around we met a group of people, led by a priest. They were preparing to carry the dead bodies of the people without any family member left out of the morgue to bring them to a special cemetery. I talked to them and so they asked me if I’d like to help. I didnt like the idea of carrying dead people and the stench was awful, but anyway I decided to do so. I went into the Morgue and saw how they put dead babies into a coffin, not an easy thing to see. While I was helping to carry the coffins to the car, I saw many dead bodies, some people full of blood because they died in accidents,… Almost finished, they opened another door to another room. This was the most disgusting and disrespectful thing I have ever seen in my life. Bodies on top of each other, limbs falling apart, people completely rotten: it was a room where dead had to stay until their lawcase was finished. I have seen many horrormovies but never something that disgusting. The stench was so bad that I always tried to stand next to someone smoking a cigarette. For the first time I loved the smell of the smoke.. I didn’t even ask to take a picture because you could not have looked more than 2 seconds on it, too shocking. Afterwards I accompanied them to the cemetery (which was a piece of land where they bury the coffins) and the priest held kind of a funeral to give this people some respect, rest and peace…

It was a hard day and a shocking experience, but I still live and: “what doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger”. So I will do the same again next week…

This evening another bad thing happened this evening: Sassie, Natachas and Audels dog, died. Natachas friend went outside with him, a car came (not that fast), for sure he saw the dog, he continued to drive, rolled over him (and at the latest now he should have noticed the accident), but he carried on driving, rolling a second time over the dog with the back tire (this first time Sassie was still alive, the second time killed him). Completely ignorant he just drove away… Thats so horrible. How can someone do this? It was even one of the neighbors… Natacha is so sad, she loved Sassie so much…

People screaming: “we want to buy justice” (corruption is still a big problem in Haiti, people who committed crimes can just buy themselves free)

04. June

I must admit, I have been very lazy with writing. Like always it happened a lot since the last time I’ve written.

The most important things: I was in the palast of the president (because the brazilian president Lula came to visit), I didn’t go out for two days because I was afraid of the kidnappings (now not anymore, but I decided to only use motorcycles for transport), I have been in the morgue and got a picture (I tried to do that several times last year and I never succeeded) and yesterday I became friend with some gangsters in a slum called Fort Dimanche (this is where they eat the mudcakes). Today there will be a manifestation against the kidnappings, I will go there for sure! It’s crazy here.. officially have been over 140 kidnappings only in 2008! The unregistered number is much higher… But I promise that they won’t get me ;-)

Yesterday I opened a bancaccount and will put a part of the donations on this account to pay for 4 children the schoolfees for 4-5 years. The most significant action to get out of the poverty is to graduate in school and if I pay it only for one year for many children, it will not help them at all. Elie, my friend and translator will be in charge that they use the money only for the school and not for anything else. I trust him 100% and he will send me all documents, pictures, etc to prove the right use of the money. He choosed me as the godmother for his newborn son, so I’m sure he will not mess up with the money.

Another part of the money I used among others for the people in Fort Dimanche (where they eat the mudcakes), the streetchildren at the airport, to buy bags of rice and lots of medecin for the sick children.

So everything is fine here, don’t worry for me (I have protection oil and insence from the witches ;) )
